 By Lisa Donahue The five support team leaders (STL) of the AmeriCorps NCCC campus in Vinton Iowa left their posts last week to serve at Camp Hitaga. Due to numerous teams being pulled for disaster assistance, STLs stepped up and took on this project which was originally intended for Oak 7. The STLs are a distinct group on campus and each one has a different role.

He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Cedar 6 is made up of seven people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest.

The Iowa State Fair has a wide variety of free, family-friendly fun coming to the 2014 Fair. Kids' activities and entertainment, all free with admission, can be found everywhere from the Kids' Zone to the Fun Forest Stage. "Nothing Compares" to the Iowa State Fair, set August 7-17. The Kids' Zone – a special area packed with games and entertainment – is planned with young Fairgoers in mind.

Keanu Harris, from Arvada, Colorado is the team leader for Maple 3 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. When asked why he decided to serve in the NCCC program, Keanu says, “I've spent years bettering myself in school, from high school through college, and I felt it was time to start bettering my community through service.

The Buena Vista University (BVU) Student Senate and Andrew Schanbacher, a senior biology major from Newhall, were honored at the 2014 Governor's Volunteer Award ceremonies held in June on the BVU campus. Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds attended the event, and over 65 individuals and organizations from northwest Iowa received awards at the event in Storm Lake, which was one of six awards programs held across Iowa.

Central College student Aly Garwood '15 presented on Undergraduate Scholarship Celebration Day, held May 8 at the college. The event provided more than 130 students with the opportunity to showcase their research and projects in a variety of disciplines. Garwood participated in presentations titled "Value Formation of Environmentally Sustainable Behaviors in Central College Students" and "Give Me Liberty: Evangelicals in Pella".

Wartburg College awarded diplomas to 323 students during Spring Commencement May 25. Area students include: Alyssa Hanson of Vinton graduated Cum Laude with a degree in Mathematics. Kathryn Henderson of Vinton graduated with a degree in Biology. Kathryn Henderson of Vinton graduated with a degree in Biology. Weston Hennings of Dysart graduated with a degree in Biology.

Jesse Crouch, from Harlem, Georgia is a corps member for Maple 4 in AmeriCorps NCCC Class 20. He arrived in Vinton on February 11 to start his 10-month service working with a team of people between the ages of 18 and 24. Maple 4 is made up of six people from across the country and they will serve together around the Midwest. When asked why he decided to serve in the NCCC program, Jesse says, “I want to expose myself to greater diversity and help Americans in need.
